So darned obvious and disrespectful. It also occurs to me that the noise inside his head from chewing may well be blocking out the translation through the earpiece. He may be trying to ignore all the deserved acclaim and accolades for the real heroes and veterans.

My Dad was at the other invasion of France, Operation Dragoon, August, 1944. He landed at Alpha Beach (Cavalaire-sur-Mer.) The Third ID made their way through rural countryside in France. He said the French farmers and small-townspeople he met were the warmest and most welcoming of all the Europeans he encountered; just like small town Americans.
