Because he lacks the physical stamina... and, even more importantly, he lacks the mental stamina ...
He probably believes campaining is below him. After all, he's been there for so long, it's "his" seat...

“Education” is a money pit that can never be filled. The ROI is poor and funding has little to effect on the generational ignorant.
Smart kids are going to do well no matter what, so funding is just another government handout to raise another generation of dependency class, non thinking, state supporting, robot voters.

I am surprised at the manner in which the elected officials in the Mississippi state houses have embraced Common Core. State senator Terry Burton for one has latched on to the federal teat and defends the federal educational guidelines as suitable for Mississippians.
Possibly not a factor if you can take your children to a private school, but how many of the Mississippians I know can do that? In the eyes of the educational bureaucracy in the state,it serves several purposes. It takes the money, takes the hard choices away, and substitutes the choice with a federally approved curriculum, and cuts back the costs associated with hiring the people who could have made good choices to prevent illiteracy and behavioral morass within the schools of our state.
The Clarion Ledger, Mississippi's paper of note, had a powerful series on special education issues in Mississippi. As you can imagine, it,too, is a dismal failure in most districts. There are a few bright spots, but that is the result of dedicated professionals taking a problem and trying to improve the lot of children, who are usually lumped together and babysat.
The schools are becoming a reason the property values go high in a area where the land has been bought up by certain groups of people. With a long term view of changing the schools ratings whenever the financial winds favor these groups of investors, the system is played to create a dynasty of wealthy that the plantation owners of old would be proud of. If you are in the income level that benefits from these schools, great. Otherwise you are consigned to send your children to failing schools where lax standards, gangs and unskilled teachers abound. Stay in your economic class and shut up.

Our side needs to start a #WhereIsCochran campaign online and maybe some yardsigns and bumper stickers. That would be so great! Have Cochran buried in all the liberal politicians in places like golf course, lunches, fund-raisers, Hawaii, Paris, and pick him out like Where's Waldo. Then there could be a final one with an empty chamber.

“I have NO idea why education is a federal matter?”
Since there is NO area into which Mordor on the Potomac will not extend its tenacles, you don’t think they would pass up the opportunity to nationalize and “standardize” the education of young skulls full of mush, do you?

So two years ago when Haley Barbour was saying that the Republican platform should include elimination of the Department of Education then he was just kidding?

So, why hasn’t all of the money Cochran sent to Mississippi changed Mississippi’s education status within the US from bottom of the 50 states to bottom of the 50 states? Its been 40+ years so why hasn’t there been a change?

Haley, or one of his sons, must be getting the Senate appointment when Cochran retires next year.

“Haley, or one of his sons, must be getting the Senate appointment when Cochran retires next year.”
Never thought of that. You’re probably right. McDaniel is upsetting the apple cart.
Did you see Mr. Smith goes to Washington? Haley reminds me of James Taylor in the movie “you were supposed to ask me! You didn’t ask me!” As if everything regarding power in the state needs to go through Barbour. So since they won’t be able to control McDaniel and he won’t owe anything to them if he does win, then they are trying to destroy him.
