Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN)[a leading political party] is now eager to see hudud [a category of punishments under Sharia] roll out in Malaysia's most developed state [which surrounds the federal territory of the capital Kuala Lumpur].

Malay-Muslim activists in support of the idea have argued the enforcement of hudud is in line Article 3 in the Federal Constitution, which states that Islam is the religion of the federation.

Opponents however argue that hudud cannot be carried out in Malaysia as Islamic law is applicable only on Muslims and if enforced, would run counter to other fundamental provisions in the constitution, namely Article 8, which prescribes equality before the law for all, regardless of their religious beliefs.

According to Wikipedia, Hudud is applied in cases of theft, highway robbery, illegal sex (like adultery), false accusation of illegal sex, drinking alcohol, and apostasy.

Hudud punishments include execution, amputation of hands/feet, and flogging.

About 40% of the population of the state are Chinese and Indian non-Muslims. Many are wealthy and influential. It's hard to picture them peacefully accepting Hudud.

But Muslims often support enforcing Sharia laws because it gives them an advantage over non-Muslims. Say you're in a dispute with some non-Muslim. Just get a few trusted buddies together to swear they heard the non-Muslim blaspheme again Islam, and you've got the upper hand.
