An entire first-grade class was bused to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for monitoring Tuesday after a 6-year-old was spotted with packets that police said likely contained heroin.

The incident happened when a teacher at John Barry Elementary at 59th and Race Streets in West Philadelphia noticed one of her students playing with small plastic packets she had brought to school.

Note to Parents; This will be an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE, that your child must make up during the Thanksgiving or Winter Break Period. Due to our policies of fairness and balance, this absence CANNOT be made up for during the Dia De Las Muertes, Kwanza or Ramadan Festival weeks. The School District deeply appreciates your cooperation.

No test to confirm the packets, no discovery if any kid ingested any of them.

Just haul the whole class to the hospital, and blast the worst-case scenario on the news.

What exactly comprises “overreacting” anymore?

From the article: “The school nurse and paramedics began checking the children, since drugs can be absorbed through the skin.”

IMO if it can be absorbed through their skin, the school officials made the right decision.

“Charges are likely, Russell said, once officials determine how the child got the 10 packets of drugs.”

Ramping up the hysteria as they see their drug war (and means of social control) slip away.

If it was heroin they could have swallowed the whole mess and been none the worse..

If it was cocaine or something else....
more problematic

The scenario that makes sense to me is, school officials absorbed the drugs thru their skin, and made a nutty decision as a result.

A sweet little girl in our carpool brought a dogs heart full of heart worms for show and tell. Her father was a vet. Very gross.
