If you check the other FR thread on this subject, it is clear that he was making a joke and the joke was well received by the live audience at the time.
Of course a live joke looks a lot different than on printed paper.
Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) provided his latest head-scratching comment in public, this time joking he engaged in illicit activities with animals as a child.
“[We’d] get back [to the Pine Belt-Hattiesburg area of Mississippi] as often as we could because it was fun—it was an adventure to be out there in the country and see what goes on,” Cochran said of his childhood and how parts of his family lived in the central part of the state. “Picking up pecans, from that to all kind of indecent things with animals.”
The audience laughed at that point,

First of all, that shows how out of touch the old coot is with the 21st Century. He should have known that in this “information age” and cyber space, that would be the death knell to his candidacy. The ones who were at his little rally and laughed are apparently his supporters. Most of them have probably practiced beastiality at some point in their life.
OK, staytrue, keep on trying to defend the senile, old, RINO. Joking about engaging in bestiality as a young man, is so tacky and inappropriate for a man who is 1 of 100, out of a population of 350,000,000 serving in the United States Senate. I guess it would be funny if he joked about molesting a child as a youth; huh?
