I don't think a religious civil war can be avoided at this point in Iraq.

Particularly since the supporters of each side (Saudi Arabia and Iran) would each benefit from the resulting rise in oil prices.

That’s about right and it’s true that both the Persians and the Soddies say that they need 100+ dollar oil to keep their countries running. The interesting part tho is that they must feed the beast to keep the level of instability up. Without the constant agitation the regular camel humpers of the entire ME would quietly go back to goat banging. It’s easy to show that the expense of agitation will kill these dummies off before the gains of high priced oil ever really show up. The whole thing is mutual-economic-suicide which will keep them all right square in the 12th century which seems to be just where they want to be.
