1. It was a big mistake to leave Iraq prematurely. Yes, Iraq wanted us out of Iraq (and now they want our help?) but we won the war and it was our decision. Bad decision by Obama.
2. If I accept the fact that we are out, then stay out. It is no longer the role of the United States to act as the world’s police force. I think putting boots back on the ground in Iraq would have made Obama’s bad decision in #1 even worse.
3. A UN brokered partition of Iraq? It would never work. Someone is going to have oil that the other group wants. Two of the three groups will form an alliance against the third. Then outside countries would form alliances and get into the act. This would practically guarantee a major mideast war. Oil prices will go up.
I don’t have an answer, but a formal partition is a mistake. The role of the United Nations should be to take care of refugees, nothing more. I’m afraid this one is going to have to burn itself out by attrition.
