CORPUS CHRISTI - The city of Corpus Christi on Tuesday announced it can not come up with all of the money needed to repay the federal government for a failed, public housing project.
The news comes on the heels of a KRIS-6 Investigation into the League of United Latin American Citizens - Apartment of the Village project, a low-income housing unit for disabled veterans.
But the project derailed and the money, disappeared.
After years of delay, the city sued the league to recover the $400,000 block grant which city leaders approved, in 2008.
That is because the city, not L.U.L.A.C., must repay the taxpayer-funded grant.
And they had until this week to return the money. But Assistant City Manager Susan Thorpe on Tuesday told the City Council the city is prepared to repay only $250,000 of the $400,000 that is owed.
As a result, the remaining $150,000 will be deducted from future, housing grants.
Thorpe's announcement has no bearing on the city's ongoing lawsuit against L.U.L.A.C., which is moving ahead.

In 2002, The Migrant Council of SE Washington partnered with the City of Sunnyside to manage and run community programs if the City was successful in obtaining $1.5 million to build the new community center. The city got the Block Grant and built the building in 2003. Within 6 months the Migrant Council pulled out of the building in the middle of the night including yanking wires out of the walls instead of unplugging their computers and phones from the wall jacks.
The building sits empty today and attempts by the city to operate it without losing money have failed miserably and this building has only been open a total of 3 full years since 2003.
Can ANY liberal provide a case where public housing has been a roaring success? There aren’t any. They are all squalid hell holes run by gangs and magnets for criminality. Pruitt-Igoe housing projects is a fascinating study if anyone wants to see the end result of public housing. The buildings were finished and occupied in the mid 1950s and tore down 20 years later.
He made that statement about 15 years after the completion of Pruitt-Igoe in 1956.
