Russia in secret plot against fracking, Nato chief says
telegraph.co.uk ^ | June 19, 2014 | James Edgar

Russia is secretly working with environmental groups campaigning against fracking in an attempt to maintain Europe's dependence on energy imports from Moscow, the secretary-general of Nato has said.

Speaking at the Chatham House foreign affairs think-tank in London, Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Russia was mounting a sophisticated disinformation campaign aimed at undermining attempts to exploit alternative energy sources such as shale gas.

He said: "I have met allies who can report that Russia, as part of their sophisticated information and disinformation operations, engaged actively with so-called non-governmental organisations - environmental organisations working against shale gas - to maintain European dependence on imported Russian gas. That is my interpretation."

Mr Rasmussen did not say what form the Russians' engagement with the environmentalists took or whether groups concerned were aware that they were dealing with Moscow's agents.

He said that improving energy security was of the "utmost importance" and required European nations to develop more diverse sources of supply.

"It also, in my opinion, involves the better functioning of the European energy market so that one single supplier is not able to able to blackmail one single nation," he said.

Greenpeace dismissed Mr Rasmussen's comments as "preposterous".

A spokesman said: "Greenpeace had thirty of its people locked up in Russian prisons last year, threatened with fifteen years in jail.

"The idea we’re puppets of Putin is so preposterous that you have to wonder what they’re smoking over at Nato HQ.

"Mr Rasmussen should spend less time dreaming up conspiracy theories and more time on the facts.

"Fracked gas will probably cost more than Russian imports, there’s little chance fracking will generate more than a small fraction of Europe’s gas needs and it won’t even do that for at least ten years.

They are just carrying forward the work of the old Soviet Union, and I’m sure Saudi Arabia and OPEC as well.

We are so stupid in this country. These environmentalists are foreign paid enemies of our nation.

This claim isn’t slightly preposterous. It’s been proven that US media personalities at least are willing to accept money from UAE to oppose fracking.

These environmentalists are foreign paid enemies of our nation.

Don't forget the People's Republic of China. Basically, every country on earth that gains by having the United States gut its industry and refuse to use its bountiful resources is bribing whoever they need to bribe. These people do not play nice and its good for business. Their business.

Armies of lobbyists who get all of these laws and regulations passed expect to be well paid. The politicians who pass the laws need expensive campaign contributions. Armies of lawyers who file endless lawsuits expect to be well paid, too. These traitors all expect a lot more than 30 pieces of silver.

The Sierra Club, the Environmental Resources Council, and other dens of traitors don't come up with this money from grandma who sends them ten bucks because she saw the photo of a sad looking polar bear in her AARP magazine.

The russians engaged in a similar effort to undermine America’s traditional “culture” in the 60’s. It started in American universities and was the genesis of the hippie and the anti-establishment movements. Their mantra was to question authority and not trust anyone over 30. Now these hippies have grown up (Boxer, Pelosi, Mr. & Mrs. Hillary) and ruining our gov’t.

And GE builds windmills, so they are fighting coal. Auto makers lobbied against streetcars. Airlines fight rail. Corn farmers support mandatory ethanol.
And Russians, who sell gas,, work to convince Europe not to frack for their own. The tech industry provides unlimited examples of trying to stifle competition through lobbying and changing public opinion.

This is just good business. Does the author expect Russia should sit meekly and watch as they see their biggest customer moving to stop using their product?

And our own political parties are utterly awash in Saudi money. That’s why we don’t get Keystone, and why coal is being shut down.

A day of honesty in the energy field would be interesting. But this isn’t just a Russian thing. This NATO leader is also being a typical duplicitous European here. The EU has been on over a decade long jihad to control Russian oil and gas by trying to place EU friendly people into political power in Russia.
Failing that, they now are whining that Russia is stopping Euro fracking.

Had the EU been able to install Khodorkovsky and his miniature giraffe in a Russian election, the EU would be forbidding fracking at home.

Follow the money, and never trust any stripe of European (including Russian in that category.)
