Around 110 men, women and children from Eastern Europe and Africa have been living in the gold and marble splendour of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for the past two weeks, ever since they were evicted by Italian authorities from a squat on the outskirts of the city. However, when the Pontiff was due for a visit yesterday to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi, he had the squatters and all of their possessions moved to the car park by Vatican gendarmes.

Okay, that made me laugh. Go Pope.
Well perhaps that might be a good solution; move them to the Vatican. In America we could do this by moving them all to Chevy Chase.

That is a beautiful Basilica. We visited in 97.
Pretty hard to say Mass with people sleeping in the pews.
I bet they were glad they had a roof over their head, and as the article states, still do:

But don’t let me stop the Pope bashing. Wouldn’t want that chance to slip by.
You don’t see the irony here....this has nothing to do with bashing the Pope.

Beat me to it! He sounds just like our leaders...I guess they’re not too worried about how God will judge them. The needy are great until they move into their neighborhoods.
I see what clearly appears to be irony, reported by the Tablet, who refers to itself as “progressive, but responsible Catholic thinking.”

I sincerely doubt he was working in his office, picked up the phone, called the gendarme, and said to move those folks.
Instead, I am pretty sure a local functionary, recognizing this is a huge political issue in Italy, didn’t want to create an unnecessarily difficult situation for the Pope.
It would be my opinion that the prelate in charge of the Basilica tolerated the squatters, at least for two weeks. The Italian govt. then stepped in to help.
With only 13 sovereign acres, how is the Vatican supposed to accept significant numbers of refugees (40k so far into Italy)? There are no social structures to provide for the needs of some number of refugees. The Holocaust was the exception, and the conditions were less than perfect.
Again, it is a case of somebody trying to whip up indignation.
So, the pope excommunicated the mafiosi.
When is he going to excommunicate the demon infested politicians? Pelosi, most any Kennedy?
It sounds like he didn’t send them back to the Italians but kept them in the Vatican. OK, the Vatican parking lot or garage (whatever a car park is).
