I disagree. Some people in this woman's situation would have noticed the thug within a fraction of a second after he appeared to the left, and would have glanced at him. That glance would have provided enough information to warrant a closer inspection, at which point the bat would have been recognized.
I think I would have noticed this guy before he was able to hit me. I have a martial artist friend who I guarantee would have noticed him.
You , nor I, have ever been attacked in a department store in this manner. As much as I pay attention to those around me and their actions, this was the sucker punch from hell.
