Add 2000 as well. George W. Bush (a moderate) lost the popular vote and would have lost the electoral vote as well had Ralph Nader not drawn 97,000 votes from Gore in Florida (Bush won by less than 1000 votes).

We concentrate on Florida in 2000. We seem to forget that Gore lost his home state which would have put him over the top.

I remember it very well.

The MSM called Florida for Gore at about 8 pm central time. The FL panhandle voters were still in line to vote, and that is/was a conservative district. There were reports that some voters left because of the long lines. It was assumed that Al Gore had won the presidency.

Similar tales came out of the western states where there was more support for the GOP. The way I figure it, the erroneous calling of the state of Florida for Gore so early cost Bush and Cheney thousands, maybe a million votes across the country.
