My theory is that Barbour and Rove know that Cochran is a dead-man walking.
The strategy was to get him reelected, and then in December he resigns and the governor gets to pick his replacement without a vote of the people.
The interim hand-picked Senator will be there for the remainder of Obama's presidency until the next federal election.

That only works if he's got less than 12 months to go. But in your scenario, the Alzheimer's patient would be looking at the beginning of his seventh six-year term. Therefore, the gov would be obliged to call a special election within 90 days.
