2. Children are especially precious in Russia & Ukraine. The economy has been so very bad since 1996.... or longer. I was told by a young man that a young married couple hopes that maybe someday they may be able to afford to have one child.
For instance, often there is not a queue to wait in at a Russian airport. But if you travel with a child the people will encourage (& actually take you) to the front to be seated first! Or, if a child is crying, an older woman maay stop & talk sweetly to the little one.
