WASHINGTON (AP) — A Marine who was declared a deserter nearly 10 years ago after disappearing in Iraq and then returning to the U.S. claiming he had been kidnapped, only to disappear again, is back in U.S. custody, officials said Sunday.

Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, 34, turned himself in and was being flown Sunday from an undisclosed location in the Middle East to Norfolk, Va. He is to be moved Monday to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, according to a spokesman, Capt. Eric Flanagan.

Maj. Gen. Raymond Fox, commander of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Lejeune, will determine whether to court martial Hassoun.

It is unclear where Hassoun, 34, has spent the past nine years after disappearing during a visit with relatives in West Jordan, Utah in December 2004. Nor is it known why he chose to turn himself in now. He was born in Lebanon and is a naturalized American citizen.

What position awaits this fellow in the Obama military? Chair of the Joint Chiefs? Facilitator of the Pride Celebration?

In Mogadishu, it turned out that the USMC reservist interpreter who was a Long Beach city bureaucrat was in fact the son of local strongman “General” Farah Aideed.

He went native and went AWOL.

“...he was “torn between military loyalty and his Muslim beliefs.”

Well so was Bergdalh - and he’s an American Hero - if one listens to Obama “never served a day in his life” POS!

Why can’t this guy get the same treatment...let’s not discriminate - might as well thrown the Military Code of Justice and the entire military oath in the fire with theUS Constitution - right Barry?

the pressure of facing desertion charges was partly to blame for Cpl. Hassoun’s decision to flee

Ahh, the pressure of facing desertion charges forced him to desert. I wonder if that would shave any years off a life sentence if he's convicted.

He is dangerous to Americans. He deserted twice. What does that tell you about how securely they guard their own military prisoners awaiting trial. He may have ‘turned himself in’ because he #1, Ran out of money, #2. Has someone from Hamas coming after him for not fighting in the Intifada.
#3. Has completed plans for his own “Fort Hood Moment”
In 2011, his family communicated with Hamas to find him.
In 2011, His family tried to secure a $1. Million dollar book and movie deal about their Son’s ‘situation’. Maybe he and Bowe can go on a book tour together. I’m sure they would get a whole bushel basket of attention. Don’t you agree?

” Nor is it known why he chose to turn himself in now.”

Well, it may be that he’s part of the Bergdahl- Gitmo 5 play the government is putting on.

His case will be a sharp contrast to Bergdahl’s.

This turkey won’t have the chance to walk out of Camp Lejeune again let alone try a “Ft Hood Moment.”

Even with the wimp we have in the WH this Hassoun is going to do some hard time, IMO.
