Defense: Seeing his commander in chief turn a Muslim convert deserter into a national hero, another Muslim soldier — a double deserter — has finally turned himself in. He deserves no leniency.
Following in the footsteps of Army deserter Bowe Bergdahl, Marine deserter Wassef Ali Hassoun has resurfaced in Virginia after years of faking his own kidnapping in Iraq. Like Bergdahl, Hassoun appears to have collaborated with the enemy.
An Arabic translator, he refused to translate questions about Islam and showed jihadist clerics undue respect during interrogations. Later he abandoned his guard post at his base in Fallujah during the critical offensive that cost the lives of dozens of his fellow Marines.
And yet, despite the overwhelming evidence against this quisling, he's been allowed to go free as a bird under this administration. Now that military authorities have him in custody, will the administration court-martial him? Or will it give him a pass, like Bergdahl?
It's no coincidence that Hassoun waited until now to turn himself in. He sees that the political climate is favorable to deserters.
Several members of Bergdahl's unit say he deserted his Afghan post and ran to the Taliban, yet Obama pretended he was a mistreated hostage in order to secure a treacherous deal with the Taliban. And the Army still has brought no desertion charges against him.
While the evidence against Bergdahl is strong, the evidence against Hassoun is even stronger.
Seven days after his 2004 disappearance from a Marine camp in Fallujah, a photo of a blindfolded Hassoun with a sword poised above his head turned up on Al-Jazeera TV. He claimed to have been kidnapped by Islamic terrorists who demanded the release of jihadists held at Gitmo and other U.S. prisons.
But the whole thing was staged.
