Why should the cops be excoriated for pushing back (if that is what this is)? Sounds like resistance to me and I thought that is what conservative activists are calling for.

Because like all public employee negotiations the ones paying the bill (the taxpayer) aren't even invited to the table.
"Resistance"? Resistance to what? Having to pay a little bit more for their insurance? AGAIN, why should they be exempt from the realities of economics? The cost of everything is going up. Why should a unionized group of public employees be exempt?
There is nothing "conservative" about supporting a public employee union.

Really? Is that how you see it? I see it as the cops, who are paid by the taxpayer, not wanting to pay their share of the costs.
BTW, what about public safety, which they purportedly swear to uphold? Should we condone their jeopardizing that in the name of a demand for exemption from economic reality?
