The bad news first. The People's Republic of China now believes it can successfully prevent the United States from intervening in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan or some other military assault by Beijing.
Now the good news. China is wrong and for one major reason. It apparently disregards the decisive power of America's nuclear-powered submarines.
Moreover, for economic and demographic reasons Beijing has a narrow historical window in which to use its military to alter the world's power structure. .........
The U.S. Navy's submarines the unsung main defenders of the current world order must hold the line against China for another 20 years. ......
How China wins
The bad news came from Lee Fuell, from the U.S. Air Force's National Air and Space Intelligence Center, during Fuell's testimony before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 30.
.......
A preemptive strike was, needless to say, a highly risky proposition. If it worked, the PLA just might secure enough space and time to defeat defending troops, seize territory, and position itself for a favorable post-war settlement.
But if China failed to disable American forces with a surprise attack, Beijing could find itself fighting a full-scale war on at least two fronts: against the country it was invading plus the full might of U.S. Pacific Command, fully mobilized and probably strongly backed by the rest of the world.
That was then. But after two decades of sustained military modernization, the Chinese military has fundamentally changed its strategy in just the last year or so. According to Fuell, recent writings by PLA officers indicate "a growing confidence within the PLA that they can more-readily withstand U.S. involvement."

We’ve got better standoff weapons, and better tools for wiping out troops like that.
Interesting strategy though.
The will to use those weapons is gone, IMHO. You’d have to if you were up against the Chinese.
Lee Kwan Yew had a piece in Forbes a couple of months ago about China’s historical stance on colonization. He pointed out that while Mandarin speakers outnumber all other languages, since China has never been colonizers, there are no ‘pockets’ of Mandarin spoken in places around the world like there is English.
I thought it was an interesting thing to say on the eve of the US stepping down from the world stage.
I have no idea but unless we put training wheels on them I’d wager it would be difficult.
It’s probably too shallow in the area for submarines to do much good. It is also the most likely spot for China to grab first.
The US will do nothing but posture and complain.
China will then think that is what the US will do the next time too.
Yeah, at least one or two things....
1. They don’t need us
2. They figure we will become insignificant anyway
3. They figure to replace us
4. They figure we are so p-whipped we will just continue to trade with them and say nothing if they will just leave us alone.
China has more than 5000 years of experience taking over land they want. They normally aren’t too gently about it either.
The funny thing is that if America just quit buying for a quarter, China would implode.
They are just as leveraged as we are, if we stopped buying before they get a foreign war started, all their energies would be diverted to killing the torch wielding villagers at their doors.
Like Benghazi, nothing will happen for hours............
That’s why I’m not too worried about the middle east.
Due to fracking on our part and exponential consumption growth on China’s part, China is going to become the big hog at the oil trough.
China won’t do business like we did.
I disagree. Obama would do a few more things.
He would delay the start of his Martha’s Vineyard vacation by 24 hours. This December, he would refuse to light the White House Christmas tree in solidarity with the people of Taiwan.
In addition, Moochelle would skip her second desert for one night to protest the Chinese action.
Don’t forget the #h#a#s#h#t#a#g# tweets.
You might be right. We need to pray that he would not do anything rash like start a battle of hashtags. Who knows where that would end? We saw how effectively it drove Boko Haram to its knees.
They’re probably right, or will be soon. We’re too busy loading up this country with Illegals while in denial that a border fence will help.
With all the fags we have on our side we can always challenge them to an interior decorating contest.
On December 6th, 1941, the United States was still Japan's largest trading partner.
December 8th, not so much...
