A senior general of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's army was killed in a mortar attack west of Baghdad on Monday even as Iraq's newly elected parliament postponed its next session until Aug 12 amid political deadlock over formation of a new government.

Brig. Gen. Najim Abdullah Ali, the army commander of the sixth division in charge of securing part of the capital Baghdad, was killed in the Abu Ghraib area west of Baghdad, near where security forces have been locked in a months-long standoff with Sunni militants who have seized control of the city of Fallujah.

The government lost control of Fallujah and parts of nearby Ramadi in January. In recent weeks, Iraqi troops bolstered by militia groups have been trying to reclaim the city. The Sunni jihadist-led offensive has recently overrun swathes of four provinces north of Baghdad and more areas in Anbar.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki offered his condolences after hearing of the general's death. -

I’m guessing this is the equivalent of knocking of General Dempsey. Serious blow to Maliki’s government. I am guessing Baghdadi is celebrating with some Halal crab and seabass

Do you really think that the loss of any of the Pentagon’s perfumed princes would be a devastating loss? The untimely death of George Patton was a great loss. Dempsey... not so much.
