My very first piece of mail during Cadet basic training at West Point....a threatening letter from the government saying I needed to register.

Classic. They should have sent you a letter threatening to have you court martialed for not registering!

I think the letter listed all the things I wouldn’t be eligible for (student loans, etc.).

Later, I was in the California desert for several weeks, training, when my mail finally caught up to me - from the IRS :(
