Shostakovich: Quintet for Piano and Strings in G minor, Op. 57

Dmitri’s music is not for everyone. His dissonant harmonies put many people off, but his sense of classical architecture is top-notch among modern Russians. This quintet is in five movements. It was written in 1940 just before Hitler descended on the Soviet Union. Just go with it. It’s an intense emotional trip; the Russian soul was going through a lot in this period. The second movement, a slow fugue, will break your heart. The third movement, a scherzo, is deliciously zany. It ends quietly and serenely.
