So can anybody explain why soccer players wear those knee high socks? I just think it's very off-putting. Is it still 1977 in the soccer world? Everybody these days wears those just over the shoe or no-show socks, if they wear socks at all.

Safety rule - socks keep the (mandatory) shin guards in place.

So can anybody explain why soccer players wear those knee high socks? Some players have boney bird like legs and it gives the appearance of hefty warrior looking legs, in an effort to scare their opponents.
