Microsoft Announces 18,000 Layoffs - Cuts Staff by 14 Percent
Breitbart London ^ | 7/22/2014 | Jeff Wolfers

Microsoft, the aging tech behemoth, has a shiny new CEO, a new strategy, new(ish) products in the pipeline and now 18,000 less staff. In a wide ranging, 3,000 word essay to his 125,000 (oops! 107,000) colleagues, CEO Satyna Nadella stressed the need to improve product cycle time, to shed excess management layers and to say goodbye to 14 percent of staff.

Politicians on both sides of the pond are not impressed. EU High Commissioner Laszlo Andor, "I deeply regret the significant job losses announced by Microsoft today because of the impact these will have on so many individuals, their families and the local communities they live and work in" and US Senator Jeff Sessions is irked that MSFT is firing thousands of staff yet continues to press for relaxed Visa rules: "That is a significant action. Indeed, Microsoft employs about 125,000 people, and they are laying off 18,000. The company laid off 5,000 in 2009. Yet their founder and former leader, Mr. Gates, says we have to have more and more people come into our country to take those kinds of jobs."

Microsoft's financials look terrific of late. The share price is up 40 percent in nine months, market cap is now $370b, sales are $83b and profits over $22billion - so why all the layoffs?

All the people producing DVD’s for Windows, boxing and shrinkwrapping them for retail and the Encarta staff will be missed.

While it stinks to lose your job but Microsoft doesn’t owe them a job. Especially when the position is done elsewhere in the company.

I’ve heard from current MS employees that the layoffs are restructuring following the Nokia acquisition. Not unusual following an acquisition, but given the size of the companies involved makes for a large number.

Typical lib. The EU has attempted to torpedo Microsoft for years thru their stupid enforced "browser choice" silliness, etc. Now Microsoft is laying of employees in a weakened economy and the EU is whining. It takes a Lib to be so totally disconnected from the reality of cause and effect.

Yes, but their also crying that they can't bring in enough "high tech" H1b visa folks to "fill their need".

There's a whole line if investigation in these conflicting actions...

They layoffs wouldn't be any of our business if it wasn't for the fact that they are lobbying congress for more visa and for amnesty.

That clearly marks their intention to layoff Americans and hire foreigners.

While the H1B procedure is flawed and exploited...

If MSFT wanted to bring Nokia employees into the US wouldn't they come using those H1B visas?

Shouldnt these retards socialists be merely grateful that MS is a business giving people jobs? What is it with these governmentoids who believe in their brokering jobs for people?

What a fraud.

I recently tried to help a friend who was struggling to get Windows 8.1 to recognize the printer. Nothing intuitive about it. I have yet to meet a Windows 8.1 owner who liked it. Thank goodness, I found Linux four years ago.

Supposedly we had NAFTA so as to promote a more independent Mexico not invading our borders... However now they expand the blackmail concept to Central America...

The government there want US industry to be kept hostage.

My point is, I don’t care if MS goes belly up.
