Not to derail the thread but Crystal is a bit off. She asserts:

"In fact, the Declaration of Independence, which gave birth to our nation, notes the only unalienable rights we have are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."


That is most emphatically not so. The declaration says:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."


"Among these" does NOT mean "only".

the water department is racist because mostly black people have been affected.

Detroit is 82% black. If white and black water customers had not paid their bills at the same rate, and those chosen to be shut off were selected randomly from the group of non-payers, then >80% of those affected would be expected to be black.

In actual fact, it's probable black people are less likely to pay their water bill than white residents.

It’s been basically a de facto welfare system. The city kept raising rates to cover the residents that didn’t pay their water bill and never tried to collect past due amounts. Those who paid their bills were paying for those that didn’t. Looks like it’s now reached the point that the system is unsustainable, the downfall of all socialist schemes.

There’s nothing in the United States Constitution stating Americans have the right not to pay their bills.

At least not till after the Article V Convention...

What people are missing (mostly willfully) is the fact that this water fight is a result of good things happening.

Its a result of the department trying to shave down debt to attract more privatization. Privatization of services is nearly always good.

Put an old-fashioned water pump every 3 blocks or so. Give everyone a bucket. Free water. You pump it and haul it, you can have it for free. Anyone who pays can have it pumped to their home or apt. Simple solution.

Not for nothing, but how the hell do you get $540 past due on a water bill?

Most places I have lived shut you off at 10 or 15 days late.

Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not the only inalienable (unalienable) Rights protected by the Constitution. They are some of them.

How does one read beyond a comment suggesting the contrary as above?
