I think his anti-Semitism was of a type that was totally normal for his time and people in his economic class. But it existed. He was an active member of a number of openly anti-Semitic organizations, he included broadly drawn Jewish caricatures in his early shorts and he apparently had a flirtation with the Bund movement in the 1930s. None of these were exceptional for the time period. But in the light of subsequent history, what else can we call such affiliations?
And no, “I had Jews working for me” is not a free pass, any more than “some of my best friends are”
