The article doesn't say, but I wonder what the CCW owner will be charged with.

Interfering with an officer in the line of duty.

If the robber didn’t have a gun out and was just running away, it was very irresponsible of this man to discharge his weapon. We don’t need people to trying to be a hero when one isn’t needed. Is it worth possibly shooting an innocent person because a guy is getting away with a few cellphones and cash?

Commendable but, it seems like a good way to shot by a cop who doesn’t know which person with a gun is the perp.

I would never use my concealed handgun to shoot a fleeing suspect for fear that I might hit a bystander. I carry mine essentially to use in point blank situations for protection.

This is Crook County, Illinois which is looking for any such stories in the media to push for more gun control. The Democrat State’s Attorney is most likely looking into finding some criminal charge to file against the CCW holder.

If anything he should get some retraining specific to CCW holders that they ARE NOT the police and the the firearm is to be used in self-defense.

He is very lucky that the officer did not shoot him.

According to the news story:

The officer spotted someone running from the rear of the building with a large duffel bag and a gun in his hand, police said.

The man with the permit later told police he ran through the store and fired at the suspect because he had seen the officer run behind the building.

"He was concerned for the safety of the police officer that he saw go behind the building," police said in the statement

No injuries were reported.

And the armed robber was captured. All's well that ends well.

I would think that having a concealed carry permit was for one's own protection. It is not a license to be an on-the-spot law enforcer.

It would be okay for a George Zimmerman to pull out a gun and shoot someone who was beating him senseless. It would not be okay for a George Zimmerman to follow a robber out into the street and play cop.

Considering the source of this story, a fact check is in order.

But If true, the CCW owner messed up big time.

The officer didn’t shoot because there was no dog at the scene.

As a general rule, cops don't like competition.
If there is a cop at the scene, put your own gun in the holster.
They want complete control of the situation and don't like untrained and unknown civilians reacting in unpredictable ways.
Let the cop deal with the perp. It's not your job anymore.

If this citizen wasn’t beaten about the head and shoulders 50 times with a baton, then the cop wasn’t doing his job...

No Charges Against Man, 86, Who Fired at Robbery Suspect
The man was permitted to carry a concealed weapon in public, police said.
By Lauren Traut July 30, 2014 at 3:57 am 1

An 86-year-old “model citizen” will not be charged for firing his weapon at a robber at an AT&T store in Crestwood last week, Chicago Tribune reports.

The man, who has not been identified, holds a concealed carry permit and pulled out his weapon to shoot at a suspect fleeing from the store, 4756 W. Cal Sag Rd, on Saturday.

The suspect was not struck.

A police officer arriving on the scene had to stop chasing the suspect and duck as shots were fired, ABC7 reports.

Demetrius Merrill, 17, is being held on $1 million bond. He was arrested after a search of a wooded area next to the Cal Sag Channel.
