I still haven't heard the 'valid point' behind "let’s make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions."

I am a woman. I think Mr. Smith was saying it takes two to tango. He was not gender specific. In the heat of a battle people push buttons that they know can lead to a nuclear explosion by the other person.

I don't feel from what he said that anyone, let a lone a woman should be subservient. But what he was saying is there is a way to avoid lighting the fuse.

Taking into account that Mr. Smith is black and that the black family is largely Matriarchal in nature. Black men are most often disrespected by black women. Women actually have power in these situations. Every situation is different.

I don't think men ever should lay their hands on a woman and I don't Mr. Smith thinks they should either. BUT, you keep in a man face enough he may snap.

Here are a couple illustrations of the valid point:
1) poke the friendliest dog in the world with a stick enough times and he will bite you.
2) Women are not always right and men are not always wrong.
3) Psychological abuse and physical abuse are both abusive.
4) Psychologically abusive women can be the aggressor in a confrontation and both parties can get hurt.
5) Read #5 again.
