Did you know that the Southern dialect is very closely related to the British? That explains why so many English actors are excellent at portraying our accent, while others mangle it.

In fact, I've read recently that the Southern accent spoken today is closer to the UK English spoken in England in the 1700's than the English spoken in the UK today.
I lived in Charleston, SC for 3 years, and the Scottish brogue was prevalent among the old timers...wonderful sounding speech.
Then I moved to Beaufort, SC, and heard Gullah for the first time. Now, that was an interesting sound.
