That has been my experience in industrial labs. Current graduates frequently do not know how to make a solution properly--they do not know how to use volumetric pipettes or how to mix volumetric flasks, and claim it is impossible to prepare a solution of known composition. They know how to push buttons, but they don't recognize when instrumentation is not operating properly.
