I would assume that means he has basically recovered. Some people do, and I think the reported death rate may be higher than it really is because most of the victims are Africans, who have a sparse diet, poor medical care and are not very good on taking care of themselves.

Yes I’m sure Africans are at a disadvantage with all diseases. Malnourished in many, if not most, cases. But of course there are vulnerable people everywhere, children, old people, people who are already sick in some way. Not every single person died of smallpox or plague either, but an awful lot did.
