Put Down the Cupcake: New Ban Hits School Bake Sales (Federal Law)
Wall Street Journal ^ | Aug 1, 2014 | Stephanie Armour

But the sales won't be so sweet starting this fall. Campus bake sales—a mainstay of school fundraisers—are going on a diet. A federal law that aims to curb childhood obesity means that, in dozens of states, bake sales must adhere to nutrition requirements that could replace cupcakes and brownies with fruit cups and granola bars.

The restrictions that took effect in July stem from the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act championed by first lady Michelle Obama and her "Let's Move!" campaign. The law overhauled nutrition standards affecting more than 30 million children.

The law also required the U.S. Department of Agriculture to set standards for all food and beverages sold during the school day, which includes vending machines, snack carts and daytime fundraisers. It allowed for "infrequent" fundraisers, and states were allowed to decide how many bake sales they would have that didn't meet nutrition standards.

Without state-approved exemptions, any treats sold would have to meet calorie, sodium, fat and other requirements. The law permits states to fine schools that don't comply.

Salt banned from the tables.

Removing salt shakers and individual salt packets from the cafeteria. They are
not available as they were in the past.
- Salt used in food preparation is kept to a minimum and high sodium food items
are seldom used.

Hope you like ‘turkey’

Using half ground beef and half ground turkey in all entrée dishes that contain
ground meat.
- Using low fat USDA commodity sliced cheese on sandwiches.
- Purchasing hot dog frankfurters made from turkey, which are lower in fat than pork
or beef franks.

Encouraged, not required. Meal is only free if they take good they do not want.

. Therefore, students are not required to take food items they do not wish to eat, but students are encouraged to take at least a minimum of 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable at each meal along with two other items from all items offered, so the meals can be claimed as a reimbursable meal for USDA reimbursement.

“students are not required to take food items they do not wish to eat, “

I don’t think this is true — I read recently that they did have take them and they ended up throwing them away.

GOP should pledge to repeal nonsense...

Why did the 'pubs in the HOR budget the money for programs that included these out-of-control regulations? They have the power of the purse, if they use it.

The next Republican Presidential nominee has a real easy promise to get elected. (unless the ptb again get to choose someone they don't really want elected) The promise would be to abolish all of Obama's executive orders by executive order his/her first day in office.

Solutions sought to reduce food waste at schools

http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-lausd-waste-20140402-story.html#page=1

“It’s lunchtime at Washington Preparatory High School in Los Angeles, but 16-year-old Parrish Jackson has barely touched her turkey burger and apricots..

She’s dumping them into the trash can.

....

But under federal school meal rules finalized in 2012, Parrish and other students must take at least three items — including one fruit or vegetable — even if they don’t want them. Otherwise, the federal government won’t reimburse school districts for the meals.”

The apricots are “sour,” the junior says. The meat is “nasty.” If it were up to her, she would just have taken the potato wedges — they’re close enough to fries — then headed to the student store to fuel up on hot Cheetos and juice.”

Also in article linked above:

“Nationally, the cost of wasted food overall — including milk, meats and grains — is estimated at more than $1 billion annually. A U.S. General Accountability Office survey released in January found that 48 of 50 states reported that food waste and higher costs have been their top challenges in rolling out the 2012 rules.”

“You summed up the whole point very succinctly.”

Thanks, many times people look at issues and conclude they are not important enough — so what if the Federal government mandates what schools should serve at lunch, so what if the Federal government mandates how much water should your showerhead and toilet use, or what lightbulbs we can use, and so on — they consider them “small inconveniences” without realizing, until it’s too late, that the Federal government has total control over us and our lives.

I wonder at what point people realize that they have completely lost their freedom, and regret the loss.

“I wonder at what point people realize that they have completely lost their freedom, and regret the loss.”

I am afraid by the time they do, it’s going to be too late — Obamacare is putting 16% of the US economy into the hands of the Federal government, they will determine what treatments are acceptable and cost effective.

And if you don’t comply with the diet they are prescribing, they may well deny you medical care — that is where this is going. Why should the Federal government determine what children should or shouldn’t eat — I thought that was the duty of the parents. But I guess the Federal government knows better than the parents and individuals what’s good for us...

Yes, good idea.
It’s time for NATIONAL CUPCAKE DAY!
Sometime in September - a special treat for the kids
at home - for having to put up with the school system...
Decorate the cupcakes with icing sayings like - FREEDOM,
LIBERTY and JUSTICE...

The key word there is ‘encouraged’.

So you are correct, they are leg through their teeth.

It can’t be a hard sell. First, they probably just convince them it is ‘mandatory’.

Second, just appeal to their helpfulness. If you take it, the meal is free, cause we get paid.

Hence, there is a LOT of tossed veggies and fruit in the trash.

Major problem.

“The meat is “nasty.””

Probably so. A turkey or turkey/beef combo. ICK.

And probably badly cooked to boot.

Kids aren’t playing outside any more; recess time at school has been reduced in favor of more academics.

If you read the text, nobody is allowed to ‘super size’ a meal.

Typical stupid ‘one-size-fits-all’ government policy.

The small girl is treated the same as the massive boy.

Calories are based on a standard person, and not a very active student !
