If you think, this is just a "minor issue" -- think again -- the Federal government is DICTATING what kids can eat in schools -- in a not too distant future, they may well dictate what we all can eat and buy in the grocery stores. Total population control.

There is no way this is legal, some school district has got to take this on.

I’m sorry, I must have missed the part of the constitution that allows the Federal government to control what people eat.

It should be a law that the first family has to STFU till they are out of office. No one wants to hear what the un-elected has to say. Especially since my sasquatch translator is on the blink.

I’m sure 100% of the people who attend those bake sales get at least 97% of their dietary intake from the products sold there.

Cough, cough, cough...

Isn’t it sad to realize that some people are so dumb, that they can’t recognize a “treat” when they see one? People don’t live off cup-cakes. They have one once in a while.

Most people don’t live off Big Macs, or Whoppers either. They have one once in a while.

You can take all the “treats” off the shelves, and some folks will still be fat. They eat too much of every type of food. You can’t legislate or issue edicts to eliminate stupid.

You can certainly ensconce stupid from the top, by acting like you can control obesity through government interdiction.

I’m really tired of the do-gooder Left mentality.

Here comes more Hope and Change, and loss of freedom.

Every day I resent Obama and his supporters more and more.

I wonder how much research has been conducted on rebound-overeating. I know from personal experience that being forced to eat a “healthy” diet as a child causes a person to overindulge in the “junk” foods that they never were allowed to eat as a child. I’ve fought against obesity all my life for just that reason and know people who are fat because of it.

Quite simply, the government’s responsibility to the citizens ends at ensuring a safe food supply and teaching basic nutrition. It is not the government’s place to dictate food choices. As the control-freak politicians become more successful in their efforts to control every bite that every child in school eats, I wonder how much worse the obesity problem will become?

If there is a real desire to fight obesity, how about taking a look at lifestyle and food choices back before obesity started skyrocketing? Kids aren’t playing outside any more; recess time at school has been reduced in favor of more academics. Now we have obese under-educated kids. Maybe it’s time to look at what *was* successful.

The Fed has no business sticking their noses in bake sales or other perfectly legal commerce..
They can publish guidelines all they want but people have a right to decide for themselves what to eat.
Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness.
If that happiness happens to be a cupcake, then I have the liberty to eat it.

“We use prepackaged food because it has to have nutritional requirements posted,” said Keli Gill, president-elect of the Arkansas PTA, where the state has had nutrition standards for bake sales for a few years. “Items like apples are perishable and don’t last as long, so we don’t want to waste money and have it go bad on us.”

Oh, this is ‘rich’ .... The Mooch is driving people to pre-packaged food with all the preservatives, additives, etc. So much for the fresh fruits & veggies & the WH Kitchen Garden ......

Control the food, control the fuel, control the energy, and you literally will have a country by it’s balls, and at your mercy. Marx knew this, Stalin knew this, Hitler knew this, hell even FDR knew this. And ALL of these “edicts, rules, and regulations” originate from federal agencies under control of the executive branch. But everybody will comply with all of these regulations because virtually every politician is a spineless, gutless traitor, bought and paid for by K street, and all in for carving out their niche in the new oligarchy.

If you want to see what the US will look like in 10~15 years, take a look at mexico and south america, because that is our fate.

The only sensible thing to do is ignore federal law, and eat the cupcakes too.

If a corporation can be a person, can the federal government be an idiot? Yes, and a virus that screws up the program.

We have already had instances where food Nazis have gone through school lunches brought from home and rejected them as being “unhealthy” forcing kids to eat the typical school lunch crud. Having participated in my kids fund raisers for band and orchestra I know that chocolate bars, popcorn and candy are easy to sell and generally give a good return for the organization. Why does the federal government have to stick its nose into this?

IMHO the real issue is the loss of additional funding. I think this was a deliberate move to make schools even more reliant on Federal funding.

Just say “No”. Hold the high-calorie bake sales anyway.

Oh...nevermind.

This law does NOT force schools to comply nor does it impose a penalty if they do not.

I'm actually surprised the WSJ published this.

The law does end Federal funding for school district's that do not comply and does "allow" states to "fine" (actually reduce their state funding, sheesh) if they do not comply.

But they do not have to comply and nobody can force them to.

Hey America. The Nazi politicians running the Federal “government” say you can’t have bake sales. How do YOU “feel” about that? “Whatever”?

I teach a severely handicapped life skills class. Bake sales are a GREAT way to teach money. Now what? I’m not there to baby sit, and cookies SELL. Carrots, forget it...
