No. While it holds the record for the highest temperature recorded, temperatures in Libya have been recorded at over 130 more frequently than Death Valley. Also there are vast stretches of the Sahara where no temperatures are ever recorded.

It's a hot place. According to my California history teacher many decades ago, the name California derived from a phrase used by Spanish explorers that means it is "as hot as a lime kiln"; in other words a hot oven. From Catalan words calc and forn, the Latin roots calcis meaning lime and fornax meaning oven. As the explorers made their way north from Mexico, they suffered the heat of the desert. Although other legends of how the name came to exist, all explanations are in dispute. I'm sticking with what I was taught, my teacher was an expert on California history.

Death Valley Officially Hottest Place On Earth
In a year that has seen the United States record its hottest month ever comes word that the country now owns the title of the hottest air temperature recorded on Earth.
The World Meteorological Organization, the weather and climate agency of the United Nations, has recognized Death Valley, California, as the place where the planet has seen U.N. agency invalidated the previous record, 136.4 degrees its hottest day ever, July 10, 1913, when it reached 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celsius).
Death Valley was able to lay claim to the title when the F (58 degrees C), that was recorded at El Azizia, Libya, on September 13, 1922.

With regard to the cooler weather in Death Valley (just went there a few weeks ago)--it's been rainy-ish here in Las Vegas, our violent "monsoon" season, so if it rained a bit west of here, there's your answer. Today was an uncharacteristically cool day for us as well. It's just another example of the news media cherrypicking unusual data points to make misleading conclusions.
Finally, even though I argued against cooling in the preceding paragraph, it probably IS cooling. Lack of sunspots, and all. Sun's been quiet.

Because of humans, the earth’s temperature is rising, causing the polar caps to melt. This causes the “swamp cooler” effect and all that cold air is attracted to the lowest desserts. Seriesly
I know this concept is difficult for conservatives and members of the Tea Party to understand, but global warming is responsible for the cooler tempretures because if not for the cooler tempretures, we would not have the warmer tempretures that are needed to prove global warming. And regardless, this is all Bush’s fault. /s (As if the tag is needed.)

I cannot say I have experienced Death Valley at its hottest point nor can I say that I have experienced the Sahara Desert at its hottest. What I can say, having lived on the western edge of the Sahara for almost two years, “it gets DAMN HOT”. I recall temps at 130-135 degrees when the winds blew from the east across that desolate place.
Yep - here in the Coachella Valley, we hit a muggy 88...and 3 days before, we scored a (dry) 116.
