U.S. President Barack Obama is considering airstrikes and emergency relief airdrops to help 40,000 religious minorities in Iraq who are trapped on a mountaintop after threats by Islamic militants, the New York Times reported on Thursday.
Obama has been looking at a range of options, from dropping humanitarian supplies on Mount Sinjar to military strikes on fighters from the Islamic State who are at the base of the mountain, a senior administration official told the newspaper.
The Islamic State's Sunni militants, an offshoot of al Qaeda who have swept across northwestern Iraq in recent weeks, have even come within a 30 minutes drive of the Kurdish capital of Arbil. They inflicted a humiliating defeat on Kurdish forces over the weekend and prompting tens of thousands from the ancient Yazidi community to flee the town of Sinjar for surrounding mountains.

ISIS has 40K surrounded on a mountain. No one is permitted off the mountain. If we try to send in humanitarian help, ISIS is going to use some of our own weapons against us. ISIS will kill two birds with one stone. Take out our aircraft and kill 40K people.
They are going to have to take out ISIS at the same time they sent food and water to them

That’s this Administration in a nutshell. Only thinking about the symbolics instead of realities on the ground.
Way too early for that. He's got to get his fantasy football draft done before he goes on vacation.
As a Platoon Leader, Obama would have been relieved within six months.
The day after I flunked my first ARTEP (with a platoon assigned to me on the day the evaluation began), I heard noises that I might be relieved within 30 days. Typical Air Defense Artillery, whose motto is "We Eat Our Young".
I learned from that experience. It's not easy being a Platoon Leader for two platoons at the same time. Time management was a beyotch, trying to allocate the same # of hours to each.
Anyhow, from that point on, my attitude was "ok, if my neck is going to be on the line, then stay the hell out of my way." I wasn't perfect, but it worked. I loved the 18+ months I spent as a Platoon Leader.
I can only imagine the fun Obama would have during exercises: while he was mulling his next move, he'd be hit with a sniper attack, or somesuch. No doubt he'd drive his platoon sergeant and squad leaders batty.
That is the UN’s job, not ours. If the UN won’t do it, it just proves that they are what I’ve called them for years- Useless Nothings.
