Border Patrol Agent's Murder Shows Open Border Danger

Immigration: Two illegal immigrants charged with killing an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent had been arrested and deported before. Now the agent's family faces a humanitarian crisis all its own.

Javier Vega Jr. was shot to death Sunday in front of his wife, his two kids and his parents while they were fishing in Santa Monica, Texas. His alleged assailants are illegal aliens who have crossed our porous southern border with Mexico repeatedly and have, between them, been arrested and deported half a dozen times.

Remember Agent Vega's name, for it's unlikely to fall from the lips of President Obama or be mentioned by any Democrat or the few Republicans who support amnesty and open borders under the Orwellian title "comprehensive immigration reform."

Focused on the orchestrated plight of unaccompanied minor children shipped north by human traffickers who participate in the child abuse some call "acts of love," the media largely ignore the acts of thugs and drug cartels that are responsible for a crime surge lost amid the border surge.

The two suspects in the Vega case have been identified as Mexican nationals Gustavo Tijerina and Ismael Hernandez. Tijerina, according to records, was arrested at least four times between 2007 and 2010 for entering the U.S. illegally. Hernandez has been deported twice after entering the country.

According to reports, Hernandez allegedly approached Vega and his family Sunday night and tried to rob them. When Vega pulled out his weapon, the suspects allegedly shot him in the chest, killing him. Vega's father was shot in the hip but managed to return fire. There are literally thousands of victims of illegals in America. The dogs that attacked and killed a Michigan man a week or so back were illegals from Europe. The killers of a homeless black man in California were illegals. The Chinese college student killed recently was killed by illegals.

Without a serious fence system for the Border Patrol to actually watch and guard, the BP is forced to “defend in depth.” The southern border is 2,019 miles from sea to sea. If the Border Patrol check points are 40 miles from the border, agents must roam across an area of 80,000 square miles seeking illegal immigrants. This is a fool’s errand, deliberately futile. 80,000 square miles is the size of Idaho or Kansas.

The same number of border patrol agents actually guarding a physical barrier means that every inch of the border is under observation at all times. For example, anybody carrying a ladder to the fence will be seen, and stopped by nearby Border Patrol agents who react to their approach. That is why the San Diego fence is so effective. It needs to be extended across the entire border. Or, we can keep play-acting at border security, with the Border Patrol playing Keystone Kops across 80,000 square miles of rough scrub land terrain.

How many miles of fence did President Bush build between passage of the law and the end of his second term in January 2009? Does his support of amnesty and lack of support for the fence indicate he hates the United States?
