You're right. OTOH, let's say that Sam doesn't get much playing time this year, you're likely to have as many gays (and pro-gay supporters) say that Sam was drafted only for window-dressing and that the Rams really aren't interested in “diversity”.
IOW, instead of being the token black, Sam will now be seen as the token gay.
There's no way you can make these people happy. The Rams really stepped in it by selecting Sam. They're gonna be damned if they do and damned if they don't.
Especially if the Rams want to petition the NFL to move out of St Louis.
