Obama proposes broader long-term strategy to confront fast-approaching militants in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Saturday proposed a broader long-term strategy to confront Islamic militants in Iraq, who have surprised U.S. intelligence with the fast pace of their approach on the Kurdish capital of Irbil.

Obama warned Americans that the new campaign to bring security in Iraq requires military and political changes and "is going to be a long-term project." He wouldn't give a timetable for how long the U.S. military involvement would last, saying it depends on Iraq's political efforts.

"I don't think we are going to solve this problem in weeks," Obama said. "I think this is going to take some time."

The president said Iraqi security forces need to revamp to effectively mount an offensive, which requires a government in Baghdad that the Iraqi military and people have confidence in. Obama said Iraq needs a prime minister — an indication that he believes he's written off the legitimacy of the incumbent, Nouri al-Maliki.

He epitomizes weakness and exudes indecisiveness.

His chickens are coming home to roost.

I will say it again, and I believe his own words support my conclusion...

This effort is nothing more than doing something just long enough to allow them to go back to doing nothing.

VacationS in the summertime. Vacations with an S. He averages one a month, basically taking a vacation from his last vacation. Wouldn’t you love that job? A vacation every month with all expenses paid.

I fear it’s already too late.

He is weak but blames others for every misstep.
Did you notice how much time he spent defending himself from criticism that he didn’t leave troops in Iraq. It boiled down to “the Iraqis wouldn’t let me...waaah”. And then said multiple times that it would not have made any difference anyway.....what a putz!

Make sure they don’t get a permanent base in Iraq? [Sounds like Boots on the ground]

No timetable? [Why not October 2016?]

[And what have we learned from the prolonged war in Afghanistan?]

We can’t do it for them: [You’ll have to prop up any government in Iraq]

Funds - we already have a lot of assets in the region, [why, we have no declaration of war except what is supposed to be happening in Afghanistan?]

[Right, it was Democrats who’s idea was to get out of Iraq, bad judgement and poor decision]

I heard that evasive drivel. The only time he showed any animiation was when the question layed fault at his feet.

The POS can’t stand the thought of being accountable for anything.

Yes, remembering after the successful surge in Iraq, many middle east inhabitants were wanting the right to vote,

and now that our US Constitution wasn’t promoted as the road-map, the chaos ensues.

he would still go on vacation and two weeks after later would “address the nation”, by reading off a prepared statement that no one attacks the United States and gets by with it.

And he would arrive late for the speech as well.

Oh thank God, I was so afraid he was going to leave without talking to is and filling us with the trust and inspiration he always raises in our hearts. I’m sure that even while he’s on vacation he’ll be right on top of this, so all the people being slaughtered can relax. (Fanning myself with relief.)
