A tick bite can make you allergic to red meat
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 7, 2014

A bug can turn you into a vegetarian, or at least make you swear off red meat. Doctors across the nation are seeing a surge of sudden meat allergies in people bitten by a certain kind of tick.

This bizarre problem was only discovered a few years ago but is growing as the ticks spread from the Southwest and the East to more parts of the United States. In some cases, eating a burger or a steak has landed people in the hospital with severe allergic reactions.

Few patients seem aware of the risk, and even doctors are slow to recognize it. As one allergist who has seen 200 cases on New York's Long Island said, "Why would someone think they're allergic to meat when they've been eating it their whole life?"

The culprit is the Lone Star tick, named for Texas, a state famous for meaty barbecues. The tick is now found throughout the South and the eastern half of the United States.

Urban legend? Seems a little far-fetched, that the bite of a tick would cause the inability to properly digest certain combinations of protein (a highly necessary component of the diet of human beings). Is there a similar response to the digestion of say, whey powder or eggs?

I would sooner believe in the economic benefits of cold fusion taking place in a glass of water.

Please report to your nearest ACA treatment facility for tick bite therapy. The liberal / progressives would clap their hands in manic jubilee if that became a reality.

Dr. Erin McGintee, an allergy specialist on eastern Long Island, an area with many ticks, has seen nearly 200 cases over the last three years. At least 30 involved children, and the youngest was 4 or 5. She is keeping a database to study the illness with other researchers.

“It is bizarre,” she said. “It goes against almost anything I’ve ever learned as an allergist,” because the symptoms can occur as long as eight hours after eating meat, rather than immediately, and the culprit is a sugar - a type of carbohydrate - whereas most food allergies are caused by proteins, she said.

“Normally I can eat a little bit of dairy,” he said, but some ice cream landed him in an emergency room about a month ago. He admitted having had recent bug bites.

So if this is true there must be lots of vegetarian dogs running around Texas, or none at all.

when will it end with these gd#^&$##^ ticks. It seems they are mutating. They bring more and more new diseases to the table.

I’m with you. I like chicken, pork and fish, but cheeseburgers and steak (on the grill) are two of life’s greatest pleasures. Another reason to detest those nasty ticks.

It seems many did not bother reading the article. Everyone should take precautions to guard against ticks bites when they go outside in an area where there are ticks. We even treat our yard for ticks and chiggers to reduce the risk for our kids. Ticks carry all kinds of diseases, and according to this article, additional risks beyond the diseases they carry. I almost died from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a tick born illness, when I was a kid.

Rush was talking about this yesterday. The Lone Star tick was around when I was a kid. It is named that for a white spot on its back. I still love red meat and am not allergic to any meat.

The risk is the tick bite, not eating red meat. People should take precautions to avoid tick bites.

Hmmmm...bet the bug's name is "Government". Everyone it bites becomes too poor to purchase red meat.

And "Government" sure is a tick; exists to get bloated off your blood!

you can do what you state, but still you are fighting a war with one hand tied behind your back.

And it appears that ticks all over are getting worse. All the “precautions” are to a degree helpful but you still can get sick the more I have read on the subject. Unless of course one decides to be a shut in or live in the concrete jungle.

Even the “tick has to be attached for up to 24 hours” may be wrong”.

I have free range guineas and chickens. All it takes is one tick to hop onto anything and travel to your yard and you happen to cross its path. Heck even DEET doesn’t always work.

Permitheren (sp?) is great on your jeans and boots. Last week I saw a tick walk up my treated jeans and he got real slow and stopped. A few minutes later I put him on a rock and was it motionless, then died.

But you still need luck. And early this summer luck was what I did not have.

I hope my insurance is adequate for me going to the hospital 3 or 4 times a week if I get bit.
