SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A hostage kidnapped during a Northern California bank robbery was killed by police in an ensuing chase and shootout, likely during a final gunbattle where the lone surviving suspect used her as a human shield, authorities said Monday.
The results of a preliminary ballistics report show that police in the city of Stockton fired the 10 bullets that struck Misty Holt-Singh, 41, and all her wounds likely came during a final burst of gunfire, Stockton Police Chief Eric Jones said at a news conference.

I remember that until not too long ago (well within my lifetime), the Washington, DC, Police boasted that they had never taken a cop-killer alive.
I would have liked to think that if the cops hit this poor woman *by mistake* enough times to kill her, they could have hit the criminal they *were* aiming for enough times to make sure he was dead.
The family also announced they have opened their own invesitgation into the circumstances surrounding Holt-Singh's death.
They were seeking documents, dispatch logs, video and other evidence police gathered during and after the violence,' according to family attorney Greg Bentley. Also wanted are guidelines and protocols for high-speed pursuits and use of deadly force as well as video taken by witnesses.

Now, while an actual shooting is quite different from an IDPA match, that level of accuracy multiplied by the number of cops at scene means that there will be a lot of rounds flying that are not hitting their target. Many people worry about over-penetration, when the real danger is a round that totally misses the target and is going at full steam towards something - or someone - else.
Many police are apparently not good shots, and according to some reports many only shoot to qualify yearly. Add to this lack of proficiency some jurisdictions, like New York, that have some crazy trigger pulls (the NY trigger), and THEN add to that SOME cops' attitudes regarding civilians (where the public is not that important to some LEOs), and you end up with a situation where you have a person with limited shooting ability and, possibly, an attitude problem, shooting almost 6 9mm rounds ...and his comrades doing the same.
Add to this that there will, in most cases, be no consequences for a 'stray bullet,' and you have a bad situation. For example, did anything ever happen to those cops who shot up a truck occupied by two women (who fortunately survived due to bad shot placement) when the cops thought the truck was being driven by that cop killer? I doubt anything happened to those cops.
Try doing that as a civilian.
Ok, since you like Obama do not understand what is a criminal matter and what is an act of war, let me try one more time to explain:
1. When rockets are being shot from one country to another, the sending country has committed an act of war if just by allowing this. The receiving country has a right to defend itself, even if noncombatants in the sending country are killed. The receiving country should perhaps minimize injury and death of noncombatants, maybe. Injury and death to noncombatants led to a clear end of WWII so even that is not completely clear.
2. When someone robs a bank, it is a criminal justice matter. It is all happening in one country. The existence of said country is not threatened by the bank robbery like it is by the rocket attacks. The police should of course try to capture the criminals who robbed the bank, but they do have an absolute duty to minimize injury to non-criminals.
One of the biggest problems with the Obama administration is its tendency to treat acts of war as criminal justice matters. One of the biggest problems in American policing is the tendency to treat criminal justice matters as acts of war and the resulting militarization of US policing.
The article says her family is seeking videos, logs, recordings etc. The Daily Mail article (post #62) is from July 18, and it says the same. Is it normal for there to be such a delay?
Not to make light of this at all. But I’ve heard it said several times over the years from, SEAL’s, SWAT etc.

You’re right. If the robbers start shooting take cover. You should have already cleared any civilians out of the area. So there is no significant risk to non participants in this drama. Then you have a choice, engage the suspect in gunfire or wait it out. Engaging means almost certainly hitting and wounding the hostage - this is real life not the movies where a single handed snap shot with a pistol at 100 yards knocks the gun out of the bar guy’s hand. Or you can wait. Yes, bad guys may make good on their threat to hurt the hostage, or they may not. Your choice comes down to a couple of options. One will get the hostage hurt or killed, the other may get the hostage hurt or killed. Of course one let’s you be aggressive and take control of the situation, the other requires patience and letting the suspect determine what happens next. So we can all see how this decision comes out 9 out of 10 times. ...

Sorry, Jeff — But if the perps tossed two of the three hostages out of the car, there’s a really good chance they would have tossed the third also when she’s no longer needed, if not sooner. If the cops had backed off, there is a really good chance that the hostage is alive today. Sure, following from a distance or by helicoptor is not as fun as a high speed chase with guns blasing away, but being a cop is not supposed to be Disneyland on steroids.

I am. And they are nothing like the cops of today. Back then they were decent individuals, interested in helping and assisting people. Not controlling and arresting people. Except for cases such as murder,rape, robbery, and stealing an arrest was the last resort. They would assist in settling disputes and advice to the youth as to future decisions they should make.

And this to you is the only concern? Cops are paid to take risks, not pass them on to the innocent.
