Teen Convicted in Steubenville Rape Back on Football Roster

Ma'Lik Richmond, one of two teens convicted in the rape of a 16-year-old girl in Steubenville, is back on the roster of the Steubenville Big Red football team.

Richmond was found delinquent of raping a 16-year-old girl in March 2013, and must register as a Tier II sex offender every 180 days for 20 years.

Richmond was released from an Ohio Juvenile Detention Center on January 6, 2014, and in June of this year, the 7th District Court of Appeals upheld his sexual offender classification. Richmond and his attorney had originally fought to have that sex offender classification dropped, but the Court of Appeals felt otherwise. Judge Thomas Lipps had ruled earlier that his sentence was to be contingent on behavior and rehabilitation while serving. Trent Mays, also convicted in the case, must also register as a Tier II sex offender upon his release.

When reached for comment, Jefferson County Chief Probation Officer Fred Abdalla Jr. said, "There's no law against it that states he can't play. There's no OHSA rules that they'd be violating, then I think the boy should be allowed to play. Malik Richmond has done everything the court has asked him since he's been sentenced."

Interim Superintendent Melinda Young says part of the current athletic policy states that any student convicted of a felony will be suspended for one calendar year.

I saw a tv show on this (so I am an expert)./s This was not really rape. The girl was drunk. Everyone was drunk and being stupid and some were being a-holes. The black kid struck me as a good kid who genuinely feels bad. He served his time. I think it is wrong that he should be labeled a sexual predator. The so called rape was finger penetration. Yes. What they did was wrong but what happened was blown way out of proportion by groups like Anonymous.

I guess we don’t have to worry about Jackson, Holder and other rabble rousers hold any vigils in Steubenville.
The law is applied quite lightly in Steubenville, unless you are a girl.

There is no reason that Ma’Lik Richmond cannot aspire to be the first eunuch to play in the NFL... with a little help from the girl’s family & friends.

IIRC there wasn’t a rape, just some inappropriate touching, and painting on the unconscious victim (who was, btw, known a party-goer).

It was a stupid, teen party, with no adult supervision; and the teens did the things they see their elders (college students) do during spring break (google that and see what you get) and on TV.

Not excusing it; but not exactly the same as a violent, mad-dog rapist, either.

The next time a drunk driver runs over a drunk pedestrian, we should excuse the whole incident as trivial because everybody was drunk. And besides, after sobering up the drunk driver felt bad.
