Navy types started calling their ships “The Love Boat” when the crews were integrated with women. The rat party pushed like hell for females to be stationed with males on ships and they got their wish. At the time, Navy Brass objected for the obvious reasons. They were politically overruled.
One point that I never heard brought up is that what potential adversary is doing the same thing?
