That has ben my experience too. One former ex- Marine coworker waa scout/ sniper in the First Marine Division and when speaking of the war and killing Japs the years would fall away from him and he would get excited and animated.
He told me of some incidents on Guadalcanal that I had read about but he had more details.
I served with a legendary Marine, Lew Hirschman, who was put in charge of Jap prisoners. He marched them out of sight and shot them all. A furious Captain threatened to have him charged with murder. His response was precise: “I had friends on the Maryland and the Arizona. Don’t put me in charge of Jap prisoners, cause I’ll do it again.”
