I worked for the Pequot tribe back in 1997. A deeper, more impenetrable pit of debt does not exist outside of government. Every capital purchase was remortgaged through Asian money men and the tribe only paid debt service on the mortgages. It was an attempt at a poison pill defense in the event their illicit tribal status was ever (successfully) challenged. As regards the tribe, my opinion is that there is more Indian blood at your typical St Patrick’s Day parade.
Along the NJ/NY border we have fake Indians (recognized by both states but not the federal government) - the Ramapough tribe. Mostly black, mixed with some whites from a couple of hundred years ago (Dutch names). Never really assimilated; lived in the mountains along the border since the Revolution, and would just as soon keep to themselves.
