They are living in a world of make believe if they think it is possible for a socially liberal society to be fiscally conservative.....Someone else ALWAYS has to pay for others' irresponsibility.

Fiscal conservatism leads to social conservatism.

If you REFUSE to fund irresponsibility, by de-funding the welfare state, young women discover that having kids out of wedlock makes it very hard to survive (something our ancestors knew well, which is WHY marriage was made into a social institution). What the Welfare State did was to fund irresponsibility, and thus make socially destructive behaviors viable.

If women suddenly need a husband, a STABLE husband with a decent job, to make it through life, they are more likely to get married.

If men suddenly discover that they need to be stable and employed in order to get laid, then they will strive to become employable. Including actually paying attention in school, and staying out of trouble, in order to avoid a criminal record which might hamper their employment prospects.

If mothers suddenly discover that Uncle Sugar won't be there, and they may need to depend on their kids to help them in their old age, then they will pay more attention to raising their kids well.

Social conservatism flows naturally from fiscal conservatism, once fiscal conservatism is allowed to cut government programs which enabled bad behavior. Attempts to impose social conservatism on a society which funds irresponsibility is doomed to fail.

Who said anything about an attempt to impose? What I’m saying is that conservatism flows from the social.

The Libertarian argument has always been, as you note, that fiscal policy should drive social change. But the kind of change many Libertarians support does not mesh with socially conservative principles.

As such, “do it my way and your way will come later” doesn’t appeal. Social conservatism first. Everything else flows from it.
