The unit has prosecuted many corrupt officials thru the years, including democrats. But most are not high profile.
So if you try to make the argument that the corrupt official unit is itself corrupt because it prosecuted 2 high profile republicans, the numbers overwhelm your argument.
If you try to say the prosecution of Tom Delay was corrupt or political in nature, that doesn't hold water either. The campaign money was laundered and the men that worked for Delay pled guilty and were convicted.
Delay's defense was that he didn't do it, didn't know about it, the other men did it on their own.
So in the initial trial, Delay was convicted, and he appealed to the 3rd Court of Appeals, who overturned the conviction.
Then Lehmberg appealed the 3rd courts decision to the State Court Of Criminal Appeals, which is the highest criminal court in Texas. They agreed to hear the case.
When Lehmberg had her "episode", Perry saw the chance to put an end to Delay's prosecution.
Perry first threatened to veto/cut off all funding to the Public Corruption Unit. Then he met with Lehmberg and said he would find her another job if she would resign because if she resigned, Perry could appoint here replacement and he would appoint someone who would squash the Delay prosecution.
Lehmberg refused that deal so Perry went ahead and vetoed/cut off all funding to the unit which would end the Delay prosecution. But the county came up with some money to keep a scaled back unit operating.
