I wonder if those Germans besieged in Brest have any idea how many hundred miles they are behind the Allied lines? I'm always interested in the question of what information is known, by whom, in these situations. I first realized this was an important point when I learned that the War of 1812 was already over when we won the Battle of New Orleans.

The fog of war is very real and is not just an expression. It is really hard to coordinate the movements of men and vehicles over a wide space. Heck, there were times when we were on peacetime maneuvers that I had a hard time figuring out what was going on and keeping my men going in the right direction.
