More than 35 percent of the city's third-through-eighth-grade girls passed the state math test, up from 30 percent last year which was the first year of the harder tests aligned to federal Common Core standards. For boys, 33.4 percent passed this year's test, up from last year's 29.3 percent.

Not noted is how many of each group are in the top 3-5 percentile bracket, which is where all the physicists, engineers, mathematicians and technologists live. The usual ratio is at least 3-to-1 in favor of males.

The ratio of girls to boys in my son’s national honor society organization is 2 to 1. Just a spot sampling and our last meeting.

My son’s school is your typical public High School.
