WASHINGTON (AP) - Two influential NFL voices - including CBS lead analyst Phil Simms, who will handle Washington's Week 4 game - said Monday they likely won't use the term "Redskins" when discussing the franchise.
"My very first thought is it will be Washington the whole game," Simms told The Associated Press on Monday.
Simms will work the Thursday night package the network acquired this season and will have Giants-Redskins on Sept. 25. He isn't taking sides in the debate over whether Washington's nickname is offensive or racist. But he says he is sensitive to the complaints about the name, and his instincts now are to not use Redskins in his announcing.
"I never really thought about it, and then it came up and it made me think about it," Simms added. "There are a lot of things that can come up in a broadcast, and I am sensitive to this."
His broadcast partner, Jim Nantz, says it is "not my job to take a stance."
NBC's Tony Dungy, one of the most prominent voices in the league as a Super Bowl-winning coach and now as a studio commentator, plans to take the same route as Simms.

Dungy is doing penance for his comments about Michael Sam. He’s in rehab, and he knows it.
I believe Johnny Manziel has already started.
NF: Negros, Felons, and Liberals.

So racist. If I was an American Indian, I would protest them.
They are the most useless part of the game anyways
I think the same about good ‘ol “respectable” Dungy also....damn PC Obama supporter has been a lying lib the whole time.
Fire their assess. That’s like a news reporter refusing to call the Protesters in Ferguson, MO, “Protestors” so he call them “Active Observers”. Simms sucks more as a broadcaster than he did a an overrated player. Dungy.... well, he’s a “minority” so he feels like he has to “sympathize”.
who cares?
A challenge for those on the show with them -- see if you can trick them into say the "r-word."
The home audience can play along too. A new drinking game is born.
Thjen have these guys show some courage and quit their jobs..
Good luck
Rather than Thugskins, why not BlackSkins?
How about refer to them as “losers”. They’ll be doing a lot of that this year.
Until I came to my senses ( at 14 ) I was a New Jerseyite and an avid Simms fans. As they say in Jersey, Phill can pound salt where the sun don’t shine!
How long have they been sportscasters? Did they never use the word before the current controversy? If they did, does that mean they’re really “racists” at heart and now just cow-towing to political correctness? And finally, how is that any different than Paula Deen using the N-word over 30 years ago, but doesn’t now?
This whole political liberalism of the NFL is really spoiling the game for me. I love football, I can’t help it. I love high school football, college football, pro football...all of it! My husband and I look forward all summer to the start of football season. But sheesh, we are only in the pre-season and I’m already sick of their political correctness!!!
Cripes! GET OVER IT YOU IDIOTS - There are real problems in the world.
A journalist got his head CHOPPED OFF and you dopes are yammering about the “redskins”.
I just can’t take it no more!
Don't need the blather
