Islamic State militants in Iraq stoned a man to death in the northern city of Mosul after one of their courts sentenced him to die for the crime of adultery, a witness said on Friday.

The stoning, which happened on Thursday, was the first known instance of the punishment by al Qaeda offshoot Islamic State militants in Iraq, although it had been reported previously in Syria.

Members of the hardline Sunni group, which seized Mosul in June and also controls swathes of territory in neighbouring Syria, have shot, beheaded and crucified prisoners and blown up and bulldozed Shi'ite mosques.

Sure adultery is worthy of death, but a goat is fine!

No, I think the liberals are not going to rise up for a man getting stoned for adultery. Not as long as the women have free birth control. That’s their line in the sand.

These guys are medieval minded tyrants. The question is, how did this culture produce this?

Don't they usually blame the wife for the husband's adultery? /sarc

The term "medieval" is really a misleading anachronism in this case. Medieval Christianity would never have condoned stoning for adultery; and I'm guessing that in some times and places medieval Islam (e.g. early Andalus and early Ottoman, before the fall of Constantinple) they wouldn't have been much interested in stoning adulterers, either.

This may seem pedantic, but in fact today's Islam is far more fierce and "fundamentalist" than even Islam in, say, 1960. It hasn't been a time-linked thing. Medieval Andalusian Islam would be rather a relief (comparatively!).

They say the crime is adultery, and adultery may be involved ... but i think often these sentences evolve from some more basic conflict. Saying it is adultery is just a way to justify it.

The Inquisition was established by medieval Christianity. It included a great many forms of torture and it was that mindset that I refer to. The use of torture and murder to accomplish the goal set by the one with the power, a tyrant.
