Panic, hunger spread among quarantined West Africans in Ebola areas
Catholic Review ^ | 8/25/14 | Bronwen Dachs

Hunger and panic are spreading among people unable to work because of restrictions aimed at containing the spread of Ebola in Liberia and Sierra Leone, say church workers in West Africa.

In Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, church groups “are trying to get food and distribute it to families who have asked us to help, but movement is heavily restricted and there is little we can do,” Salesian Father Jorge Crisafulli, provincial superior in West Africa, said in an Aug. 22 telephone interview from Accra, Ghana.

Neighborhoods in Monrovia have been sealed off under terms of the government-imposed state of emergency.

The World Health Organization has estimated that more than 2,600 people in West Africa have been infected with Ebola since March. More than 1,400 people have died from the virus.

Food prices in Liberia are “rising steeply and people are hungry,” Father Crisafulli said, noting that “markets in the city that are usually bustling are now empty and no trading is happening.”

People are unable to get to work and, “while they still have to buy food, they have no money because they can’t work,” he said.

“There is great fear of spread of disease where there are large groups of people,” he said.

Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea are the countries mainly affected by the current Ebola outbreak.

“Particularly in Liberia, Ebola has become an economic and social problem as well as a health problem,” Father Crisafulli said, noting that “panic and fear are now greater problems than the disease itself.”

I saw a recent pic that showed these folks standing behind tall razor wire, holding their hands up trying to catch the water pouches being thrown over. So sad.

Maybe food/water can be airlifted/dropped to them?

I hope the West will step up and send in food/supplies (if they're not already).

I'm afraid given the current occupant of the WH and the total lack of any kind of leadership there, the west wouldn't be able to find its way out of a paper bag using bread crumbs, a GPS and a sherpa guide.

Click whatever you like.

Just realize that some folks are only here to plant hit-bait.

They care nothing for Free Republic.

And if you support that.. well.. have a nice day.

I care. What if he's just using us to advertise his site? He doesn't give a damn about Free Republic, he just wants hits. You're just fine with that?

The Catholic Review is not his site. It is the newspaper of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, a legitimate new site.

“People also post stuff from HuffPO... that doesn’t mean they’re trying to promote HuffPo.”

You miss the point. This pimp never posts from but a single source:

Ever wonder WHY?

I clicked offsite and then came back. He gave me enough to want to read it. This story is showing how the house of cards is coming down over there.

I know your thing humblegunner, and don’t want to get into a pissing match with you. I just thought you might want to know that some people come here to find stories like this. The click offsite is not much of a problem for me.

I do however appreciate the full stories over excerpts and I understand the other site might be getting ad money from the clicks here.

a legitimate new site

That should be "a legitimate news site".

The Catholic Review is not his site.

I don't think I've commented on whose site it is.

The point is that this pimp only posts from one source.

That calls motivation into question.

I’d hope so. Let food and water down a detachable cable from a helicopter?

But you did. You said: What if he's just using us to advertise his site? ... he just wants hits. (emphasis mine).

Maybe food/water can be airlifted/dropped to them?

We are talking tens if not hundreds of thousands of people caught in these quarenteened zones. They are absent any civil control or organization and any supplies would be fought over viciously at this stage without a presence there to distribute it equally.

Obviously he’s engaged in publicizing the site.
It may or may not be his.

Do you assume that whoever puts out McDonald’s commercials are the owners of McDonald’s?

The poster posts stuff from a single solitary source, this I have demonstrated and this is a fact.

Just a coincidence, right?

Given that the region is still intensely tribal any air drops would just bring about the local strongman and his henchmen who would control those and use them to subjugate/extort the rest.

I think Sirleaf just wants them dead. I look for a ‘mysterious’ fire of some sort in the next few days/weeks.

I sincerely hope I’m wrong and their exposure to zebola is small and inconsequential and all they get is good and mad about being confined.

Nope... never really paid attention. I like to read things from all sources... even the opposition's sources. I'm not afraid to hear opposing points of view on things.

Well, he obviously writes for that site. It looks like a blog site. I have one too. Pretty much for my customers and what not. No ads. But I dont think I would have much of interest for the readers here.

In any event, the article in question was from the Catholic News Service. It was a legit article, and an interesting read. I have not read anything else this poster has put up. But if it is from the CNS and is of general or even Catholic interest I think its fair game for posting.

If he was posting the article about the first day of school for his kids or grandkids, I would agree with your principled protest.

We must agree to disagree on this one.

But, I compliment you on your diligence. I would never think to review every posters history to ensure the sanctity of FR.

Do you get paid for this, or are you JR’s hitman?

I am a member of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and I know for a fact that the site is the official site of the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Some people post articles of a particular nature or from a favorite source. That doesn't mean they're shilling for the site. Please go read the newly posted article on Free Republic, The 10 Commandments of Logic. You're violating several of them.

I certainly hope they can get something organized and get food to them. My friend on FB was begging me to find a way to get even a little rice to him. That kinda stuff gets pretty personal when there is no way you can provide even that help because of liberian gov’t blockade.

I never questioned the validity of the source.

I question the motives of the poster.

Have you a media consultant on staff?

Looks like we found him, huh?
